Odisha is home to over 62 distinct tribal communities, representing a massive 22.8% of the state's total population. The Kandha (or Kondha) are the largest group, primarily residing in Kandhamal, Rayagada, and Koraput. Other prominent communities include the Santal, Bhumia, Munda, and the primitive Bonda of the Malkangiri hills.
These communities are intricately connected to their ancestral environments—drawing three-quarters of their non-rice sustenance from the forests—and are known for vibrant folk dances, distinct languages, and sustainable farming like shifting cultivation.
