Surapura Samsthana (Historical and Archaeological Study of Poligar State in South India) The fall of Vijayanagara Empire caused the emergence of splinterstates in South India and Deccan. These states collectively knownas Poligars (Palegars). They dominated the political scenario ofthe South India from These Poligar states founded by the warriortribes of South India; they eventually came to the mainstream ofthe south Indian polity.The present book deals one such Poligarstate known as Surapura Samsthana founded by the Bedars and ruledbetween 1650 and 1858 AD. In Sagara-nadu or Shorapur Doab (GulbargaDist. Karnataka). The Samsthana was an off-shoot of theVijayanagara empire and the Adil Shabis of Bijapur, and itmaintained its suzerainty in the Shorapur Doab along with the Nizamand the Marathas. For the first time, by using archaeological andtextual evidences, a complete reconstruction of the political andcultural history of the Samsthana has been presented here. One ofthe main objectives of the present work is brought out acomprehensive study of the art and architecture of the SurapuraSamsthana including a comparative analysis in relation of the artand architecture of the contemporary powers in the Deccan.Systematic documentations of forts, capitals, small settlements,palaces, temples, monasteries and other aarchaeological sites ofthe Samsthana are presented here. The book also offers analyticaland comparative studies of the monuments of the Samsthana with theother contemporary political powers of south India and Deccan inorder to understand the importance of the Samsthana's art. TheSamsthana painting (Shorapur School) is well known as a sub-schoolof Deccani painting. The book also presents the tradition ofpainting developed substantially under the samsthan'spatronage.
