This collection has been brought out for a special purpose: the Festival of India. The object throughout has been to present a glimpse of contemporary Indian poetry. Indian poetry is the finest manifestation of Indian sensibility which is a unique blend of tradition and modernity not to be found anywhere else. Most Indian languages have poets operating in them who can be proudly presented as the major talents at work today. However, it is neither possible nor desirable to present a collection that would be both representative and comprehensive. This anthology compiled and edited by a poet-critic is specifically concerned with introducing modern Indian poetry to those not familiar with it. In the process he has selected a number of poems which can be described as the authentic expression of the human condition here today. This volume is a tribute to the '..fists of various Indian languages and various Indian poets; the poems have been translated by some of the ablest hands, so much so, that these renderings read, often enough, like poems in original.
