Book Description

Bhupen Khakhar: Maganbhai’s Glue, Pages from a Diary, Vadki, Phoren Soap and Maujila Manilal is a collection of short stories and a play by one of India's most distinctive modern artists and writers, Bhupen Khakhar.

Originally written in Gujarati and translated into English, this volume offers a fascinating glimpse into Khakhar's literary imagination. Through humour, irony, everyday incidents and unconventional characters, Khakhar explores the complexities of middle-class Gujarati life, human relationships, social conventions, sexuality and personal identity.

The collection includes:

• Maganbhai's Glue – A humorous and unconventional story with a surprising twist.

• Pages from a Diary – An intimate portrayal of unspoken affection and same-sex desire.

• Vadki – An exploration of domestic relationships and the significance of an ordinary object.

• Phoren Soap – A witty narrative examining the impact of a seemingly mundane object on a married couple and their community.

• Maujila Manilal – A comic play exploring desire, marriage, relationships and social hypocrisy.

Written with a keen eye for human behaviour, Khakhar's stories combine gentle satire, earthy humour and emotional sensitivity. The collection reflects his ability to find extraordinary meaning in ordinary lives while challenging conventional ideas about society, morality and identity.

Published by Katha in 2001, this volume is an important literary work that reveals another dimension of Bhupen Khakhar's creative genius beyond his celebrated paintings.
