A well-knit and coordinated system of transport plays an important role in the sustained economic growth of a country. Transport has recorded a substantial growth over the year both in spread of network and in output of the system. The ministry of Road Transport and Highways is responsible for the formation and implementation of policies and programmes for the development of various modes of transport save the Railways and the Civil Aviation. India has one of the largest road networks in the world. The country's road network consists of National Highways and State Highways. The National Highways which is the responsibility of Central Government has about 70548 km length and state Highways about 128000 kms. The State Highways is under the responsibility of state Government, it is developed and maintained by various agencies in the state and Union Territories.
