The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, formally known as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) of 2005, is a law providing legal guarantee of 100 days of wage employment per financial year to every rural household willing to do unskilled manual labor. Its primary objective is to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by generating wage employment through infrastructure development and also serves as a social safety net for vulnerable groups. The Ministry of Rural Development monitors its implementation in association with state governments.
