With every alternate person being illiterate, the Indian state launched the National Literature Mission in 1988 with a renewed zeal to achieve full literacy by the turn of the century. A campaign approach is being pursued with a District as a unit of operation in 270 out of 500 district in the country. It is at this time that a comprehensive evolution of Total Literacy Campaigns in one of the middle ranking Indian State, Karnataka, has been reported here. In holistic as well as discrete ways the study has covered various components of the campaign such as environment building, primer quality, training of functionaries, organisational and management aspects, classroom transactions, overall impact along with insights regarding Post Literacy and Continuing Education Programmes, relevance and effectiveness have been discussed. Constraints and facilitators have been identified. Executive Summaries are given for policy reorientation's. In sum, this book should be useful to policy-makers, planners, administrators and managers of campaigns, functionaries at various levels, professionals, journalist in the field and academicians in university Departments of Adult Education.
