Colon Classification (CC) is an analytico-synthetic library classification system developed by S.R. Ranganathan, an Indian mathematician and librarian, in the 1930s. It uses colons and other punctuation to combine different subject facets—Personality, Matter, Energy, Space, and Time (PMEST)—into a comprehensive call number. Although it is a complex system used primarily in India, it is of continued interest for its flexible, analytical approach to knowledge organization
