In 1951, Octavio Paz travelled to India to briefly serve as an attache in the Mexican Embassy. He returned eleven years later as Mexico's ambassador to India, a position he served in for six years. In Light of India is Paz's most personal work of prose to date, a celebration of a country he loved. His essays are full of knowledge and poetic insight and the result is a series of fascinating discourses on India's landscape, culture and history.
Octavio Paz (1914-1998) was born in Mexico and is best known as a poet-essayist. He was also a professor critic and translator and was Mexican ambassador to India and France. Like Neruda and Jorge Luis Borges, Paz is a Latin American literary giant whose work has influenced South America's politics and culture, as well as the world's. Many of his books have been translated to English, including his renowned collection of essays on love and criticism, The Double Flame (Harvill, 1996). He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990.
