Sanskrit inscriptions of Northern India include some of the oldest examples of Sanskrit writing, such as the Hathibada Ghosundi Inscriptions (2nd-1st century BCE) in Rajasthan and the Ayodhya Inscription (1st century BCE) in Uttar Pradesh, which reveal early, sometimes informal, use of the language. During the Gupta period (c. 300-500 CE), Sanskrit became more prominent in a script derived from Brahmi, as seen in various inscriptions detailing religious and cultural practices, including land grants and royal charters. Later inscriptions, such as the Nagari script and eventually Devanagari, also showcase the continuous presence and evolution of Sanskrit in the region.
